Journey to the ocean floor

So today, I walked on the ocean floor.

The really muddy ocean floor. Thankfully, the fine folks who operate Hopewell Rocks have spray hoses for those of us who couldn’t resist going for a stroll. Which is good because my shoes and feet were positively slathered in mud.

The ocean floor is heavy on the mud here.

That part of the Bay of Fundy is so muddy, by the way, that one of the nearby rivers is called Chocolate River.

But Hopewell Rocks, which have been carved quite dramatically by the incredible tides of the Bay of Fundy, are pretty neat. I saw them at low tide, which allows you to really check out the formations and walk along the beach (plus ocean floor). You can go back later and check them out at high tide, when I imagine they look quite different, but I didn’t have six hours to wait – I needed to head to Nova Scotia.

Which is where I am now. I abandoned my plan to do a whole loop, and have decided to focus tomorrow on the Lunenburg area and Peggy’s Cove before heading to Halifax. This way I’ll have more time to spend in those places, and Saturday is for Halifax.

I’m very excited in the coming days – my spouse is joining me for a week, and we’ll be visiting friends who are up in Cape Breton for a couple days.
